How the game was won: The Nationals built a 3-0 lead with one run apiece in the first, third and fourth innings, then cruised to a 3-1 win in a series opener at Washington. Steven Strasburg (4-5) pitched five scoreless innings of four-hit ball with one walk and six strikeouts for the Nationals in his first start after a 3 1/2-week stint on the disabled list for neck tightness. Braves starter Alex Wood (4-5) allowed 10 hits and three runs in seven innings. Cameron Maybin homered for the Braves, and also popped out foul with bases loaded to end the game.

Number: 6. Consecutive losses for the Braves against the Nationals this season. The Braves won the first game of the season between the teams, and the Nationals have won them all since and averaged nearly eight runs per game against the Braves this season.

What's next: The Braves and Nationals play the second game of the series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., when Atlanta ace Shelby Miller (5-3, 1.99 ERA) tries to end his six-start winless streak. He'll face Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (5-5, 3.75).
