AL EAST NOTES
Blue Jays
With 1B Edwin Encarnacion having a setback in rehabbing his strained right quadriceps, the Blue Jays obtained 3B Danny Valencia from the Royals for RHP Liam Hendriks and C Erik Kratz. Toronto’s regular 3B, Juan Francisco, has been filling in at first. … Infielder Brett Lawrie, on the DL since late June with a broken right index finger, began hitting off a tee.
Orioles
Pitching coach Dave Wallace will not be with the team this weekend. He is at his daughter’s wedding. Scott McGregor, a minor league pitching instructor, took over. … Baltimore is 12-3 in extra innings through Tuesday. “To do that, you’ve got to have a good effort out of your bullpen — and we did tonight,” manager Buck Showalter said. The Orioles were 16-2 in extra innings in 2012, and this is shaping up to be that kind of year. “We have good chemistry in the clubhouse like we did back then and obviously we have a good bullpen as well,” said Manny Machado, who homered leading off the 12th inning to beat the visiting Angels 7-6.
Rays
Pitcher Chris Archer insists he isn’t mad at Boston’s David Ortiz. A day after Ortiz slung his bat and leisurely trotted around the bases following a home run off him, Archer had more thoughts about Big Papi’s style. “I never saw Hank Aaron flip his bat,” Archer said. “I’m not comparing the two, but they’re obviously in the same class of players as far what they accomplished. I guess different people have different ways of reacting. That’s just who he is.” … The Rays announced a formal wear theme for their road trip to Oakland and Chicago this week. Fedoras are encouraged.
Red Sox
Felix Doubront has complained about being moved to the bullpen after going 2-4 with a 5.19 ERA in 10 starts. In seven relief appearances, he’s allowed 11 earned runs in nine innings. “If the role is not sitting well and affecting his pitching, there needs to be a different focus in realizing his potential and focus,” manager John Farrell said. … C David Ross, who has been hobbled by a painful right heel, believes the pain is caused by plantar fasciitis.
Yankees
Derek Jeter now has 3,420th career hit, one more than Yastrzemski. Next on the list is Honus Wagner at 3,430. “It’s tough to enjoy when you lose the game,” Jeter said. “I’m pretty sure when this season is over and done with, I’ll look back and get a chance to realize how special it was.” … The Yankees should have a better idea this week of the chance Masahiro Tanaka pitches again for them this season. Tanaka, diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow, received a PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection July 14 as part of a rehab process the Yankees hoped would return him to the rotation in six or seven weeks.
