Braves left-hander Andrew McKirahan is scheduled to undergo an MRI this afternoon after he experienced tightness in his forearm during his spring debut.

McKirahan departed early from Wednesday’s game at the Orioles.

“I felt good (but) my fourth pitch I felt a little something, and my fifth pitch is when I knew,” he said. “I didn’t feel anything crazy. It was discomfort and I knew it was probably the best idea to come out and let these guys check on it. At this point early in spring training no use in trying to throw through any injury or pain.”

The Braves claimed McKirahan off waivers from the Marlins during 2015 spring training. He joined the big-league club in mid-April and appeared in three games before being suspended 80 games for a failed test for performance-enhancing drugs. McKirahan rejoined the Braves in July and ended up posting a 5.93 ERA over 27 1/3 innings with 22 strikeouts and 10 walks.

Because McKirahan is a former Rule draft pick, the Braves must keep him on the roster for the first two months of the season or offer him to the Cubs for $25,000. That’s half the claiming price the Marlins paid for McKirahan in the 2014 Rule 5 draft.

McKirahan, 26, missed most of the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
