The Braves acquired first baseman Matt Olson from the Athletics for outfielder Cristian Pache, catcher Shea Langeliers, and righties Ryan Cusick and Joey Estes.
The trade likely ends the Freddie Freeman era in Atlanta.
Here is what people, including Olson, were saying Monday on social media:
Alex Anthopoulos just acquired Matt Olson, one of the best first basemen in the league, and yet he was at the point of tears.

That should show you how much he and the Braves cared about Freddie Freeman.

By the way, Braves fans, you’re gonna love Matt Olson. One of the best defenders you’re going to see at first base, sneaky one of the best power bats in baseball when he’s locked in, and just a genuinely good dude. I know it sucks to lose Freddie, but you’re getting a great one.

Matt Olson vs Freddie Freeman in 2021:
— Paul (@BravesStats) March 14, 2022
Olson (turns 28 this month)
35 2B, 39 HR, 88 BB, 113 K, .271/.371/.540
153 OPS+, 146 wRC+, 5.8 fWAR, 5.0 bWAR
Freeman (turned 32 last September)
25 2B, 31 HR, 85 BB, 107 K, .300/.393/.503
133 OPS+, 135 wRC+, 4.7 fWAR, 4.5 bWAR pic.twitter.com/zek8Kn2v6p
The best thing Matt Olson can do is come to Atlanta and be Matt Olson.
— Kris Willis (@Kris_Willis) March 14, 2022
He can’t try to be Freddie Freeman
If the @Braves were not going to be able to sign Freddie Freeman, Matt Olson, who grew up in the area, is a VERY GOOD option. I’m happy and I’m sad at the same time. Will miss you #MVFree pic.twitter.com/Klq5AbQPZn

Freddie Freeman will forever be a Braves legend.
— Jesse Simonton (@JesseReSimonton) March 14, 2022
Dude gutted out the rebuild, became the face of the franchise and spearheaded a World Series run.
Probably the smart move to sell high and get Freeman 2.0 in Matt Olson, but damn if this doesn't sting a bit.
most HR vs. LHP as a LHB in a single season, MLB history:
— Céspedes Family BBQ (@CespedesBBQ) March 14, 2022
2021 MATT OLSON: 22
2002 Barry Bonds: 21
1996 Ken Griffey Jr.: 21
1998 Ken Griffey Jr.: 21
This doesn’t just go away. It’s forever.

I am sad about losing Freddie and excited about Matt Olson. Both are allowed to be true at the same time. pic.twitter.com/1GrbcMV3C3
5.8 WAR, 39 homers and 111 RBI in 2021!
— MLB Network (@MLBNetwork) March 14, 2022
Atlanta native Matt Olson is reportedly headed to the #Braves. pic.twitter.com/fmVefg2v7t
Freddie will forever be one of my favorite Braves of all time. Wish him absolutely nothing but the best. But I get it, it’s a business.
— Overeacting Cy (@overeactingCY) March 14, 2022
Not going to hold it against Matt Olson that he is replacing a favorite. #GoBraves #GoingToCryNow
The Braves traded their #2,3,9, and 14 prospects (BA) to get Matt Olson instead of re-signing their long-time star Freddie Freeman that just led them to a World Series ring.
— Michael Mayer (@mikemayer22) March 14, 2022
Heart hurts losing Freddie, but getting Matt Olson is the smart move for this team long term and gives us plenty of money to play with now...
— Atlanta Sports Guy (@Atlantasportguy) March 14, 2022
Will allow us to resign Riley, Swanson, Fried, etc down the road.
While losing Freddie Freeman is a big change for the franchise, #Braves were able to get a suitable replacement, a talented 1B in Matt Olson.
— Grant McAuley (@grantmcauley) March 14, 2022
This trade will be judged immediately - and then more accurately over time. But it's certainly an adjustment for the club and the fans.
Matt Olson IS a superstar. We got no worse. I’ll say this again. We may have upgraded.
— Brian (@BrianC_Chandler) March 14, 2022
Two things are beyond true. We will miss Freddie and what he did for this franchise. Matt Olson is damn good at baseball.
— BravesSource (@WhyWeChop) March 14, 2022
How does Matt Olson and his bat fit into this lineup? Well, his 5 fWAR season last year would have been top on the Braves. His 146 wRC+ would have been second to just Ronald. Matt Olson is a star of his own.

Massive loss, but huge gain as well.
