Passengers aboard a Southwest flight from San Francisco to Phoenix said they didn’t even know a woman had given birth until they heard the baby crying and the mother’s husband calling for help.

Ken Marshall told the L.A. Times the mother simply told the flight attendant, "I just had a baby."

The woman was wearing pants and apparently stayed seated in her window seat while the baby slipped out shortly after the plane took off, around 6:30 a.m.

A doctor and nurse who were on board rushed to help the woman; the flight crew covered the baby with blankets and cut the cord with another passenger’s cosmetic scissors.

After the mother and baby were cared for, the pilot announced the baby was a boy and passengers cheered, Marshall said.

The flight was diverted to Los Angeles for cleaning. Passengers continued on to Phoenix on a different plane.
