A woman was seriously injured when she crashed into a barrier wall on I-285 in Sandy Springs, prompting an hourslong shutdown that marred the start of the Friday morning commute.

Westbound traffic was diverted off at Riverside Drive for more than two hours while the lanes were closed, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. The lanes reopened shortly after 7 a.m., when the investigation was moved to a left shoulder.

According to Sandy Springs police, the woman’s vehicle was the only one involved in the wreck. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, and her condition was not released.

Even after the interstate reopened, there were still heavy delays through the Northside for much of the commute, traffic reporter Mark Arum said. The ride on I-285 from Ga. 400 to Riverside Drive was a slow 51 minutes at 7 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation, police Sgt. Sam Worsham said Friday afternoon.

The shutdown caused miles of backups on the Perimeter during the Friday morning commute.
