A crash involving a Hero Unit and two other vehicles blocked westbound traffic on I-20 in Atlanta on Friday morning.

A crash involving a Georgia Department of Transportation HERO Unit and two other vehicles snarled westbound traffic on I-20 for about two hours Friday morning.

The wreck occurred about 7:30 a.m. when the driver of the HERO Unit stopped to get a mattress off the interstate near Hamilton E. Holmes Drive, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

“The HERO truck had its flashing emergency lights, as well as a directional electronic signboard activated,” GSP spokeswoman Franka Young said, adding that the truck parked in the right lane just beyond a curve.

Overgrown foliage along the right shoulder of the interstate, however, obscured the view of a driver pulling a trailer with a Ford pickup truck. The driver swerved to avoid the emergency vehicle, but another SUV following closely behind it was unable to stop in time, Young said.

The SUV crashed into both the HERO unit and the truck’s trailer, authorities said. According to investigators, the driver of the SUV complained of injuries but was not taken to the hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities cleared the scene just before 9:40 a.m, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
