A funeral Mass for Howard “Bo” Callaway, considered by many as the father of the Georgia Republican Party and its first superstar, is planned for noon Wednesday, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Pine Mountain. The service will be followed by a private burial. Striffler-Hamby Funeral Homes, Columbus, is in charge of arrangements.

Callaway, 86, died Saturday in Columbus, nearly two years after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.

His death marks the end of an era that saw him become, in 1964, the state’s first Republican congressman since Reconstruction, and almost the first Republican governor two years later. And while he never returned to elected office, veteran Georgia Republicans say he never stopped working to grow the party.

Callaway, a native of LaGrange, is survived by his five children; Elizabeth “Betsy” Callaway Considine of Denver, Colo., Howard H. “Bo” Callaway Jr. of Bristol, Va.,Edward C. Callaway of Hamilton, Virginia Callaway Martin of Toronto, Canada, and Ralph W. Callaway of Columbus; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
