Christmas may be over, but the cold weather is sticking around.

Metro Atlanta is in store for another chilly day on Saturday after the coldest Christmas on record since 1989. Residents are waking up to temperatures in the low 20s, but it feels even cooler with the wind chill, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Jennifer Lopez said.

“We are off to a very cold start across North Georgia,” she said, adding that gusty winds are making it feel more like 13 degrees in some areas. The good news, she said, is that it won’t be quite as cold as it was on Friday.

This afternoon is expected to reach 44 degrees in Atlanta, slightly warmer than yesterday’s high of 34.

“There’s not a huge warm-up coming our way but, we will notice a big difference from yesterday,” Lopez said. There’s also plenty of sunshine this afternoon and no rain is expected, according to the latest forecast.

Temperatures will drop into the 30s after the sun sets and should fall back into the 20s overnight. Warmer temperatures are on the way, however. Sunday is expected to reach the mid-50s in Atlanta, kicking off a sting of nicer days.

The sunshine is expected to stick around through at least midweek, and there’s no rain in the forecast until Wednesday, Lopez said.

The day after Christmas is typically one of the busiest travel days of the year, so drivers are encouraged to give themselves a little extra time on the interstates. There shouldn’t be much road work to compete with, however, as the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended most construction-related lane closures until 10 p.m. Sunday.
