A freak accident left a driver pinned between his car and the side of a McDonald’s building in Duluth on Sunday, but officers were able to free him and get him to the hospital.

The man, identified as 21-year-old Carlos Tuscano, was last listed in stable condition, according to a statement from Gwinnett County police.

Police said Tuscano was in the drive-thru line at the restaurant in the 2100 block of Duluth Highway when he dropped his credit card outside his car. When he opened his door and leaned down to pick it up, “he pressed down on the gas pedal and his car accelerated forward,” hitting a metal pole next to the building, the statement said.

When officers arrived at about 7 p.m., they found Tuscano non-responsive, with half of his body slumped outside of the car. According to body camera footage released by Gwinnett police, the first officer on scene used a baton to break the glass of the passenger-side window in order to get into the car and put it in neutral.

Officers and a bystander then pushed the car backward, freeing the driver.

But Tuscano still did not have a pulse. Two officers began CPR, and the driver started gasping for air after several chest compressions.

He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

“The swift action of these officers probably meant the difference between a serious injury accident versus a traffic fatality,” Gwinnett police said.
