Daniell Jackson was probably pretty shocked around 5:15 Thursday afternoon. As she worked in the Subway restaurant on the 3100 block of Peachtree Road, a tall, thin man walked into her store. According Atlanta police she recognized him as the person who robbed her store just last week.
The man entered the restaurant, used the bathroom, and then left. Jackson immediately called police.
After talking to Jackson, police spotted the suspect, Jason Simmons, entering a CVS store on the 3200 block of Peachtree and followed him in. When they went to detain him, he started to yell: “I was going to pay for my ice cream!”
When the confused officers patted him down, they found the aforementioned ice cream bar in his pocket. They also found a black BB-gun pistol in his backpack.
After an interview at the precinct, Simmons admitted to the Subway robbery along with several other robberies in Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead and Brookhaven, police say.
“We had been looking for this subject that was wanted in connection with several robberies,” said Capt. Paul Guerrucci. “He’s a serial robber.”
In all, Simmons is being charged in seven robberies, Guerrucci said. All took place within 15 days and the description of the suspect was very similar in each.
Guerrucci said it was highly likely that the BB gun found in Simmons’ backpack was used in some of the robberies.
Recently, the FBI made a wanted poster billboard for Simmons, claiming that he was armed and dangerous and a suspect in multiple armed robberies.
The description on the billboard was of a white man, 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11, slim, 20-30 years old, blond hair, long face and bad teeth. The ice cream probably didn’t help that last one.
