More than 7,600 gallons of sewage spilled in Lawrenceville on Monday due to a damaged pipe, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources said.
The spill, coming from a gravity main on Johnson Road, was reported at 11:50 a.m. Water department crews were able to stop the flow by 1:20 p.m. By then, 7,624 gallons of sewage had spilled from the main.

Crews determined a damaged pipe was the cause of the spill. Some of the sewage entered nearby Pew Creek, requiring the department to report the spill to the state Environmental Protection Division.
The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were also posted to alert residents to the spill. Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastro-enteritis and E. coli.
