Gwinnett County Public Schools
The Gwinnett County School District is the largest in Georgia, with about 176,000 students and a budget of nearly $2 billion. Gwinnett County is frequently lauded for its efforts to close the achievement gap between white and nonwhite students. The Los Angeles-based Broad Foundation has twice (2010 and 2014) honored Gwinnett for such efforts, giving students hundreds of thousands of dollars in college scholarship money. It is known for its stability. All five school board members have served for more than a decade and its superintendent, J. Alvin Wilbanks, completed his 20th year in the job in March.
