Sending a child off to high school presents new challenges. Parents have to figure out the balance between letting their teens figure things out on their own and getting involved when it’s important.

And sometimes it’s hard to know what’s important.

We offer some advice for parents, some of whom are sending their child off to today or later this week to the first day of high school.

Among our seven high school survival tips: On some calm February evening when your high school freshmen or sophomores are watching “Chopped,” sit down and show them a typical college application. Point out all the questions about how they demonstrated leadership in high school, how they displayed academic commitment or how they helped the community. Senior year is the wrong time to first think about those answers.
