Student’s family criticizes Gwinnett County sex-assault investigation

Sept 21, 2016

The family of an Atlanta-area high school student has asked the federal government for help with what they say was a poorly done investigation by Gwinnett County’s school system of her sexual assault allegations.

The female student says she was assaulted by a male classmate at Peachtree Ridge High School in February 2015. The boy says he believed the sexual activity was consensual.

School officials conducted an investigation, and both students were suspended for 10 days for engaging in sexual activity on school grounds, according to an attorney representing the girl’s family.

The girl’s family has filed a complaint with the U.S. Education Department’s Office of Civil Rights.
