For 93 years, members of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority have promoted unity among women, even those who don’t officially wear their letters.
For years, the sorority has worked with women who are not members of Greek-lettered organizations.
These women were organized into auxiliaries that had various names until 1954 when the sorority officially approved an organized affiliate group. It would be named Philo, which is Greek for friend.
In 1980, the Philos were organized on a national level and have grown to represent hundreds of women.
They have contributed countless hours of community service and thousands of dollars to help Sigma Gamma Rho’s aim to enhance the quality of life within every community. They participate in activities that strengthen the sorority and improve civic and community conditions at the local, regional and national levels.
Philos are governed by the policies and procedures of the sorority. The structure of the affiliate mirrors that of the sorority in that the Philos are organized and meet locally, regionally and nationally. Membership in the affiliate is by invitation.
Members of Sigma Gamma Rho are also cultivating younger women and have formed another affiliate group, Rhoers. Aimed at girls 12 to 18-years old, Rhoers focus on college readiness, health and fitness, overcoming obstacles, and building leaders.
The Rhoers have the unique opportunity to partner with sorority members on their major programs such as Swim 1922, a partnership with USA Swimming to encourage the community how to swim and teach them about water safety, and Girl Scouts of America to bridge the gap between African American girls and STEM majors.
Local graduate chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho are very involved in the success of the Rhoer and Philo affiliate groups. They sponsor the affiliates and appoint chapter advisors to work one-on-one with them.
