Police: Man attempts to rob Georgia Tech students with plastic gun

Sept 14, 2016

Atlanta police are searching for a man two Georgia Tech students say tried to rob them last week near the campus.

The students said they were standing outside their apartment on Ethel Street at about 11:30 p.m. Friday when a man exited a vehicle and pulled out what they later believe was a plastic gun, demanding their property, according to a report on the school’s website.

The suspect did not take any of the victims’ property and left in the vehicle headed east on Ethel Street towards Hemphill Avenue. No injuries were reported.

Robberies near the campus have been a constant problem in recent years. Students and faculty have asked for more frequent police patrols in the area.

Georgia Tech reported 8.7 violent crimes per 10,000 students, according to a recent Atlanta Journal-Constitution analysis of FBI statistics for 2014, the most recent year available. Morehouse College, located a few miles south of Tech, reported the highest rate of 28.4 violent crimes per 10,000 students.
