Many metro Atlanta school districts and child care centers are spending time educating students and parents about ways to prevent the flu and finding ways to keep it out of their classrooms.

Gwinnett County, the state’s largest public school district, sent a reminder last week to parents and staff encouraging them to consider getting the flu shot and encouraging them to wash their hands frequently. Cobb County has done the same, noticing an uptick in flu-like illnesses. Similar messages have been sent by school districts such as Clayton, Forsyth and Fulton counties.

Child care centers such as Kids R Kids are using equipment to constantly clean frequently used items to remove germs that result in students getting the flu.

Officials at Long Cane Elementary in LaGrange have placed medical-grade hand sanitizer in every classroom and are requiring students to use it every morning after more than 50 students exhibited flu-like symptoms in recent weeks, Channel 2 Action News reported.
