Gwinnett County schools had the most instances of sex offenses by students in the 2014-15 school year in metro Atlanta, according to Georgia Department of Education.
There were 1,027 reported incidents which resulted in disciplinary action in Gwinnett, while DeKalb had the second-highest figure among metro Atlanta schools with 530, based on the latest data compiled by the state DOE.
The incidents reported include sex offenses and sexual harassment. The state’s definition of sex offenses is “sexual intercourse, sexual contact or other unlawful behavior or contact intended to result in sexual gratification without force or threat of force and where the victim is capable of giving consent. Includes indecent exposure and obscenity. Examples include entering or downloading pornographic content onto school computers.”

The state’s definition of sexual harassment is “deliberate, repeated, and unsolicited physical actions, gestures, or verbal or written comments of a sexual nature, when such conduct has the purpose or effect of interfering with a student’s academic performance or creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive learning environment. Examples include behaviors such as leering, pinching, grabbing, suggestive comments, suggestive jokes or pressure to engage in sexual activity.”
Sex offenses and sexual harassment are among a list of other disciplinary incidents in schools in metro Atlanta compiled in a searchable database by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, as part of a recent report on school security.
