More Gwinnett County public school students are taking and participating in performing arts programs and classes, according to a recent report.
The number of performing arts students in high school increased from 21,846 during the 2014-15 school year to 26,582 students the following school year, a 21 percent increased. Among middle school students, there was an increase from 33,680 performing arts students to 36,720, a 9 percent rise.
Gwinnett administrators reported the data to school board members during a work session this month.
Gwinnett, like many school districts and state education department officials, is working to get more students involved in the arts. Educators say statistics show students who are in arts programs perform better academically. Gwinnett started its first dance program this fall at the new Coleman Middle School in Duluth.
