Governor’s Education Reform Commission considers school choice options

Gov. Nathan Deal’s Education Reform Commission continues to consider new policies that could affect money for schools when a committee meets today.

Members of the group considering school “choice” are gathering at 10 a.m. near the Capitol, where they are expected to hear from advocates of so-called educational savings accounts and scholarship funds, which could expand the way taxpayer dollars can be used to pay for schooling.

Perhaps the most significant of the committees — the one considering new ways to allocate state revenue to school districts — was supposed to meet Thursday, when chairman Charles Knapp said he expected some specific ideas to emerge. However, that meeting was cancelled, with no reason given.

The next funding committee meeting is June 11. Today's choice meeting is at 10 a.m., in room 406 of the legislative office building across the street from the Gold Dome, according to the schedule posted on the governor's website.
