Southwest Georgia Technical College in Thomasville was awarded a $2.3 million job-driven training grant as part of a federal program designed to build partnerships between employers and higher education.

The award was part of $450 million in similar grants given to almost 270 community and technical colleges across the country. Vice President Joe Biden, along with U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, announced the winners of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training competitive grant program on Monday.

The college grant recipients will work with businesses to develop curriculum to help retrain low-wage, low-skill workers for in-demand jobs in fields such as health care, manufacturing and information technology.

Southwest Georgia Technical College has an enrollment of about 2,400 students and is a member of the state’s technical college system, and it has satellite campuses in Grady and Mitchell counties. The college is expected to be merged with Moultrie Technical College by July 1.
