Georgia superintendent among finalists for national prize
A Georgia schools superintendent has been named a finalist for national superintendent of the year.
Philip Lanoue, superintendent for the Clarke County school district of Athens, is among four finalists for the prize given out by the School Superintendents Association. Finalists also include superintendents from Florida, Louisiana and Virginia.
The 2015 national superintendent of the year will be announced during the 150th anniversary celebration at the National Conference on Education, Feb. 26-28, in San Diego, Calif.
Under Lanoue’s leadership, the Clarke County school district has been credited with closing the achievement gap between economically disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students. The district’s graduation rate is also above the state average.
A $10,000 college scholarship will be presented in the name of the superintendent of the year to a student in the high school from which the superintendent graduated, or the school now serving the same area.
