The FBI in Atlanta is warning of a phone scam primarily targeting college students.

The FBI says it has received multiple calls from college students at various universities in Georgia complaining of the scam in which someone claiming to represent the federal government or even claiming to be FBI agents. The caller threatens the students with arrest and not graduating from college if they fail to pay delinquent student loans or dues, taxes or overdue parking tickets. The caller says the fees must be paid immediately through MoneyGram.

The caller also attempts to gain personally identifiable information from the students, according to the FBI alert issued Monday. Also, the phone number used by the scammer that shows up on a student’s caller ID is “spoofed” to display the telephone number of the Atlanta FBI field office.

“The public is reminded that the FBI does not call private citizens requesting money,” and to never give out unsolicited requests for personal information, investigators said.

The phone scammers have also targeted college students in other states, including Wisconsin, according to the FBI.
