Two paraprofessionals at Rockdale County’s Shoal Creek Elementary School have been fired after a woman said her grandson’s teacher left the 5-year-old boy suspended by his belt from a chalkboard as punishment.
The incident took place April 28, the boy’s grandmother, Tracy Davis, told Channel 2 Action News.
Davis said the school’s principal discovered the punishment and stopped it.
“He was in distress because he was screaming and hollering,” she told the station.
The boy is a special-needs student, Davis said. She added that she learned it was not the first time her grandson had been punished that way at the school.
The school system has notified the Department of Family and Children Services and local law enforcement and will refer the matter to the state’s Professional Standards Commission, which can investigate and strip a teacher of his or her license or enforce other punishment.
A teacher is also on administrative leave, school officials said. Rockdale officials said in a written statement they would recommend the teacher be fired.
