Six outstanding members of the Class of 2013 in Cobb County Schools have been named winners of $2,500 National Achievement Scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. They are: Adia DeCarla Coley, Lassiter High School; Kristen P. Green and Stephen P. Green, Walton High School; Haley M. Booker-Lauridson, Mina Ezikpe and Nicholas Ngare, Wheeler High School.

A senior at Atlanta's Benjamin E. Mays High School is about to be recognized under the bright lights of New York City for her business acumen — something she started to cultivate in her home at age 14. JuShawn Carter, founder of CakesbyFourteen, will be honored at a gala at The Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, marking the 25th anniversary of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Franchesca L. Thompson, a teacher at North Atlanta High School, also will be recognized at the gala on April 23. Youth Entrepreneurs Georgia is a high school business education program that works to create productive members of society and improve communities by cultivating an entrepreneurial way of thinking. Established in 1987, NFTE began as a program to avert dropouts and increase academic performance among students who were at risk of failing or quitting school.

Seventeen students from Gwinnett County Public Schools have earned their national certification in welding through Maxwell High School of Technology, the district's technical education charter school. In the current school year, Maxwell's welding program was named a certified training center for the National Center of Construction Education and Research. The students who completed the program are: Arnulfo Casco and Micah Lewis, Brookwood High; Andrew Edwards; Archer High; Defarra Gaymon, Sean Heenie and Tommy King, North Gwinnett High; Tommy Givens, Duluth High; Deion Hewitt, Dacula High; Shirrahn McNair, Norcross High; Christopher Monturo, Parkview High; Shedric Moody, Shiloh High; Justin Norris, Central Gwinnett High; Mohini Persaud, South Gwinnett High; Eddie Rincon, Meadowcreek High; Joey Sarro, Collins Hill High; Diante Scott, Hooper Renwick School; and Nicholas Sperling, Mill Creek High.
