Georgia Superintendent John Barge said he wants residents of Cobb County to have a say in whether their tax dollars should be used to help build a new stadium for the Atlanta Braves.
Barge, running for governor, noted that the Cobb County School district, like many others in the state, has furloughed teachers and shortened its school calendar to compensate for reduced funding. If elected governor, he said he would not sign legislation allowing state funds to be used to facilitate the construction of a new stadium for the Braves or the Atlanta Falcons unless legislators commit themselves to providing more funds for K-12 public education.
“Where are our priorities?” Barge said in comments to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’re building a new Falcons stadium. We’re building a new Braves stadium. At the same time, we’re underfunding public education by a billion dollars a year.”
