The day after media reports of as many as 30 Glock handguns missing from the Atlanta Public School district, district officials announced that they had accounted for 90 guns recently purchased for the use of a newly formed district police force as well as 18 guns previously purchased.

But district investigators are still trying to find out if the district owns any other guns, according to a district statement released this morning.

Yesterday, district officials said little about the investigation into guns suspected stolen from the school district.

The school district is forming its own police department to replace the Atlanta Police Department officers who had patrolled local schools. District officials have said an in-house police force will give them more control over how officers are assigned and trained.

Yesterday, a school district spokeswoman declined to answer questions about how many guns were missing, how they went missing, when the loss was discovered, the value of the missing equipment or if the district reported the suspected theft to law enforcement. Atlanta school district spokeswoman Kimberly Willis Green said yesterday only that the district’s Office of Employee Relations is “investigating the matter.”

Atlanta Police Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Espy said yesterday the department is assisting with the school district investigation, which was launched in response to an anonymous tip about stolen guns.

Today, the district said it has contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to assist with its ongoing investigation, according to a written statement.
