The GBI is investigating after a Georgia State University off-duty officer shot a man Sunday night who was firing into a crowd at Atlantic Station.

An off-duty Georgia State University police officer shot a teenager who exchanged gunfire Sunday night with a group during a fight at Atlantic Station, authorities said.

Atlanta officers responded to a disturbance call on 17th Street just after 10 p.m. and found a large crowd gathered in the aftermath of a shooting, the GBI said in a news release. The shooting was the result of a dispute between two groups, according to the state agency.

The teen, whose age was not released, was involved in the argument and ran a short distance away on 17th Street, the GBI said. He then exchanged gunfire with the group.

A GSU officer working an extra job and a security guard responded to the fight, GSU interim police Chief Anthony Coleman said. After encountering the teenager “actively firing shots into a crowd,” the GSU officer shot the suspect, Coleman said. The officer rendered aid until Atlanta police arrived and the teen was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

As of Monday morning, the suspect was stable, Coleman said. No other injuries were reported, he added.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred late Sunday night on 17th Street,” an Atlantic Station spokesperson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution via email. “The safety and well-being of our community is our top priority and we are working with law enforcement as they investigate this matter.”

This is the 99th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been asked to investigate in the state this year. In 2020, the agency investigated 96 such shootings. The AJC also tracks officer-involved shootings that don’t involve the GBI, and those numbers sometimes differ from the GBI’s tally.
