North Georgia just can’t shake the heat, humidity and afternoon storms.
Friday will see more of the same hot and stormy weather that has shaped every day this week, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. With another 40% chance of rain in the forecast, Monahan said Friday will still get plenty of sunshine in between scattered afternoon downpours.
“The weekend is right around the corner,” he said. “It’s not a washout, but there are some high rain chances coming our way, especially by Sunday.”
Monahan expects thunderstorms to become more widespread Sunday afternoon and has increased rain chances to 60%. It will be a day for indoor activities, he said.
“Today and tomorrow are not so bad,” Monahan said Friday. “You’re going to have a good amount of time to get those outdoor plans in over the next couple of days.”
Like in recent days, Monahan expects showers and storms to begin popping up after lunchtime Friday. Before then, Atlanta is starting the day dry and warm with temperatures in the low to mid-70s. The projected high Friday is 90.
Monahan said sunshine will mix in with the afternoon downpours, but heavier rain is possible, too. He expects at least 10 hours of sun Friday. Sunday, with its elevated rain chance, will see only 7 hours, according to Monahan.

“A lot more rain over the weekend and into early next week,” he said. “We’re keeping a close eye on Tropical Depression Fred.”
The storm remains weak and disorganized as of 5 a.m. Friday as it moves across Cuba, Monahan said. It could impact weather in the Florida Panhandle by the end of the weekend and bring rain to North Georgia by early next week, he said.
The only traffic hotspot Friday morning is on I-285 on the Southside, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
All southbound lanes were temporarily closed on the outer loop at the ramp to I-85 South, the Traffic Center reported at 6:30 a.m. Commuters leaving Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport should use I-85 to get into Union City.
