Temperatures are near freezing in metro Atlanta on Friday morning, and numbers keep falling.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said most of North Georgia will hit the freezing point by sunrise. The mountain counties already have a head start with morning lows in the 20s. A freeze warning is in effect for the entire region until 10 a.m. Friday.
Monahan said it won’t stay this frigid all day, eventually topping out in the mid-50s Friday afternoon. Atlanta’s projected high is 56 degrees.
“That’s still about 15 degrees cooler than we typically are for early April,” he said. “We should be near 70. We’re going to be in the mid-50s later today. That is a whole lot warmer than what we’ve got for you outside right now.”
With plenty of sunshine and dry weather, Monahan said Friday should be a nice day. It will be the start of a warming trend that will bring North Georgia out of its cold snap in time for spring break, he said.
The cold weather “will last through today, through tomorrow morning, and then warmer air starts to move our way starting Easter Sunday,” Monahan said. Temperatures should return to the 70s Sunday, according to Channel 2.
There is no rain in the forecast through early next week.
“I do expect the pollen count to jump in the next few days with breezy weather, with increasingly warm weather and with the sunny weather,” Monahan said.
Pollen levels have been in the extremely high range for the past nine days. A new count is expected at 8 a.m. Friday.

An accident involving a pedestrian could create big traffic problems Friday morning for commuters heading into the city from the northern suburbs. The accident was reported just before 6 a.m. on Ga. 400 South past Lenox Road.
Two right lanes are closed, and at least two vehicles are stopped on the shoulder, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Authorities have not released any details about the crash.
“This is going to cause a big jam heading down from Sandy Springs,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
