North Georgia is trading highs in the 80s for temperatures a little closer to average and the chance for some rain Tuesday.

The reason for the weather change? A cold front is moving through the region, triggering a few showers Tuesday morning, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Rain is 40% likely and should be scattered.

“Even though there are showers in the forecast today, and some of you may have already had some — a few sprinkles here and there around metro Atlanta — still OK for outdoor plans,” Monahan said. “Just a cooler day and a few showers around through lunchtime.”

Tuesday is off to a warm start with temperatures in the upper 60s in Atlanta, but Monahan said it will have a much cooler finish. After a high of 84 degrees Monday for this season’s warmest day yet, the city will top out in the low 70s Tuesday afternoon, according to Channel 2.

A projected high of 73 is actually three degrees below average for this time of year. Rain and clouds in the forecast will help keep temperatures at bay.

“Overall, this is going to be pretty scattered rain today,” Monahan said. “Not everyone is going to see it, but where we do, a couple of quick showers are possible through about lunchtime today. After about 1 p.m., we’re left with just clouds across North Georgia.

Once the cold front slips into Middle Georgia, the sky should clear out, he said. That will mean some late-day sunshine, but it will also produce chilly conditions for those headed to Truist Park for the Braves’ series opener against the Chicago Cubs.

Monahan is expecting to start the game in the 70s when the first pitch is thrown at 7:20 p.m., but temperatures will fall quickly once the sun goes down.

“Maybe bring a sweatshirt if you are headed to the park tonight,” he said. “It’s going to be cool for the late innings. We’re going to drop back into the low 50s and upper 40s by the time you wake up tomorrow morning.”

The setback should be brief, as Monahan is expecting temperatures to rebound quickly with dry conditions the rest of the week. By Friday, 80s are back in the forecast for Atlanta.

At this point in the year, allergy sufferers can enjoy the warm, sunny weather without fear of aggravating their symptoms. Monahan said Atlanta is now past peak pollen season, and he is expecting pollen levels to drop in the coming days. As of Monday, the daily pollen count was still considered high at 431 particles per cubic meter of air.

Atlanta's projected high is 73 degrees Tuesday with a 40% chance of a shower.
