Man killed after firing shots at Spalding County deputies, officials say

Deputies arrived at a home on Bonnie Ridge Drive after getting a call about a man standing in the street acting strange.

A man was killed overnight in an exchange of gunfire with Spalding County sheriff’s deputies, officials said Thursday.

Deputies arrived at a home on Bonnie Ridge Drive at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the GBI. Residents had called to report a man standing in front of their house and damaging their property.

When deputies arrived, Ryan Force, 35, opened fire at them and a deputy returned fire, killing the man, the GBI said in a news release.

No deputies were injured.

The GBI will continue to investigate. Once complete, the Griffin Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office will take over.

Since Jan. 1, the GBI has opened 51 investigations into shootings involving Georgia police officers or sheriff’s deputies.
