The GBI is investigating a second officer-involved shooting in Georgia within the past 24 hours.

James Brian Kay, 54, of Martin, shot multiple people with a shotgun before Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrived at his Carnesville home, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

The deputies were called about a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, they found one person with a gunshot wound outside the home on Roberts Lane, Miles said.

Kay allegedly came out of the house and fired in the direction of a marked patrol car. Deputy James Justice fired one round, which struck and killed Kay, Miles said.

Three people were found shot at the residence, all with serious wounds, Miles said. They were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, S.C. An 11-year-old was reportedly present at the time of the shooting but hid.

This is the 14th such investigation for the GBI in 18 days, Miles told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

DeKalb County police said the officers were released from the hospital overnight.
