Authorities have identified a man who shot and injured his 6-year-old son, then shot and killed himself near a public park in southwest Atlanta on Monday.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office said Michael Williams, 43, turned a gun on himself after shooting his child.

The incident happened about 4:30 p.m. near Perkerson Park on Deckner Avenue, just south of Atlanta’s Beltline.

Officers at the scene found Williams sitting in a car with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer TaSheena Brown. He died at the scene.

The child was in the back seat of the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the face but was alert, Brown said. The boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he was stable Tuesday morning.

The case remains under investigation.
