Marietta police believe a 70-year-old Cobb County man shot and killed a women and then himself Sunday morning.

The shootings happened around 10 a.m. on Gateview Way, in a neighborhood off Scufflegrit Road, according to Officer David Baldwin. Neighbors heard gunshots and called police, Baldwin said.

Investigators believe Henry Harlan Wooten, of Acworth, went to the home of Kay Cornell Janus, 72, and shot her in the garage, Baldwin said. Wooten then walked about a block down the street before shooting and killing himself in a cul-de-sac, according to police.

“Although the motive is still under investigation, it’s apparent that Wooten shot Janus in the garage of her home and then left the scene on foot,” Baldwin said in an emailed statement.

Neighbors on the street may have tried to intervene before the man killed himself, Baldwin said. Wooten and Janus were previously involved in a long-term relationship, according to police.

The shootings remain under investigation, and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Michael Freer at 770-794-5477.
