One person was killed and another was critically injured Sunday night in a crash on I-85 in southwest Atlanta.

They were traveling south on I-85 in a 2016 Kia Sorento when police believe the driver lost control of the vehicle, Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Lisa Bender said after a preliminary investigation. The Kia slid into a guardrail before going over the rail and striking a concrete pole.

All lanes of I-85 South were shut down at Metropolitan Parkway around 10 p.m. while emergency crews responded, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“The passenger was deceased on scene and the driver was transported to Grady (Memorial Hospital) in critical condition,” Bender said.

The victims have not been identified.

Police initially reported that a second vehicle was involved, but Bender said Monday that may not be the case.

“Investigators are working to determine if there were additional vehicles involved,” she said.
