A Georgia State Patrol trooper who was injured Tuesday morning during a pursuit and fiery crash in Atlanta has been released from the hospital, authorities said.

Sgt. Jeremy Hilley was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital after the wreck, which occurred on Bolton Road just east of I-285.

The chase began about 6 a.m. on I-20 West near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive after a motorcyclist passed between Hilley and another driver, a maneuver commonly referred to as “splitting lanes,” GSP spokeswoman Lt. Stephanie Stallings told AJC.com.

After being passed, Hilley clocked the motorcycle traveling 103 mph in a 60-mph zone, officials said.

The trooper chased the motorcyclist west on I-20 and then onto I-285 North. Both vehicles then exited onto Bolton Road, where they crashed on the ramp.

“The motorcycle and patrol crashed independently, not into each other,” Stallings said.

The trooper’s vehicle went through the barricades and into the woods before catching on fire, authorities said.

Hilley, who works at GSP Post 9 in Marietta, received several stitches on the right side of his head. The eight-year department veteran also suffered a minor injury to his right arm but didn’t have any broken bones. He was released from the hospital and is resting at home, Stallings said.

The motorcyclist ran away from the scene after crashing. He has not been located, but investigators said they know who he is. Charges against him are pending.

A motorcyclist took off after the crash, leaving the bike in the middle of the road.
