A manhunt is underway after officials said a Rockdale County jail inmate escaped from Grady Memorial Hospital early Monday.

Timothy Shane was taken to the hospital at 8 p.m. Sunday for an evaluation after an attempt to harm himself and escaped on foot around 1:20 a.m., according to the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office. He then stole an SUV that was parked nearby, according to officials.

At some point, Shane crashed the vehicle and ran away. It was not immediately clear where the vehicle had been left. Officials said the SUV owner reported a Glock handgun had been stolen from it.

“Inmate Shane has a history of fleeing, along with felony drug and weapon charges,” the sheriff’s office said. “He should be considered armed and dangerous.”

Officials said Shane is 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a buzzed haircut. He was last seen wearing a blue hospital gown with no shoes.

The Atlanta Police Department is assisting in the search.
