One woman was pulled from the home by neighbors but died at the scene, while a second woman was found inside.

Cobb County officials have identified a mother and daughter who were killed in a serious house fire Tuesday morning.

Geneva Parson, 83, and Madie Stennette, 64, both died in the blaze at the Mableton home, Cobb police spokeswoman Officer Shenise Barner said. Detectives are still working to determine the cause of the fire, but arson has been ruled out.

Tearful neighbors and mourning family members shared their grief Wednesday. A man who identified himself as Parson’s son and Stennette’s sister, but otherwise asked not to be named, told Channel 2 Action News that the family had lived in the Mableton neighborhood since the 1990s. Neighbors remembered the women as welcoming and kind.

“It’s just a really sad thing, a loss for the whole community,” neighbor Phyllis Roche told Channel 2. “They’ll both be missed greatly.”

The fire was reported shortly after 7 a.m. at a home in the 700 block of Kenneth Lane, Cobb fire spokesman Ramses Rivas said. Multiple units responded within minutes and found “heavy fire involvement” at the scene.

Firefighters attacked the blaze while simultaneously treating one woman who had been removed from the home by neighbors, Rivas said. That patient died from her injuries at the scene. Less than 10 minutes after the initial 911 call, firefighters found the second woman dead at the front door of the burning home. Officials have not said which woman was pulled from the home and which was found inside.

The fire was brought under control just before 8 a.m., Rivas said.
