An Atlanta Public Schools administrator who helped lead the district’s COVID-19 response is leaving for a job in another school system.

Katika Lovett, assistant superintendent for student services at APS since 2019, will be the next chief of staff for the Bibb County School District. She will follow Dan Sims, an associate superintendent at APS, to the Macon district. Sims was previously named the new Bibb County superintendent.

June 30 is the last day at APS for both Lovett and Sims.

Before her current APS role, Lovett previously served as the executive director of special education at APS.

As an assistant superintendent, she helped manage the district’s response to the pandemic, including COVID-19 vaccination events at schools. Lovett became a public face of the district’s strategy as she regularly reported updates on COVID-19 cases, mask rules and other procedures to the school board.

In November, as part of the APS’ annual employee awards, Lovett was named District Administrator of the Year.

An APS spokesman said the district has begun a search to find Lovett’s successor. In the meantime, Chief Academic Officer Yolonda Brown will take over her duties.
