The schnauzer-poodle mix found emaciated, locked in a crate and abandoned in a Gwinnett County ditch earlier this month has died, authorities said Wednesday.

Police are still searching for his abuser.

The pup -- named "Adam" by Gwinnett County animal control staff -- was found Oct. 16 at the Norcross-area intersection of Rotondo Way and Rotondo Place. Authorities believe he may have been in the crate for several weeks, or even several months, and he was caked in urine and fecal matter. He was barely able to open his mouth because his fur was so matted.

Gwinnett County police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington confirmed Wednesday that Adam died two days after being taken in by a rescue group. He was believed to be about 2 years old.

"At this point, we do not have any leads in the case," Washington said in an email.

A $2,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter at 770-339-3200. Tipsters can also remain anonymous by contacting Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS or crimestoppersatlanta.org.
