Colquitt County has established its superiority over Georgia by winning the Class AAAAAA championship this past weekend, but how would the Packers do against other teams across the South?

Our resident computer ratings expect, Loren Maxwell, has an answer of his own and the computer validated what many AJC readers already knew - that Georgia plays some of the best high school football in perhaps the strongest high school football region in the nation.

Using data from MaxPreps, Maxwell crunched the numbers for all 2,425 state association teams in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, both of the Carolinas, and Tennessee.  It turns out not only does Georgia boast the best team in the South, but the best two, Colquitt County and Buford.  In fact, Georgia claims nearly a third of the top 150 slots, more than any other state.

Key games among the top teams that made a significant difference in the ratings were Colquitt County’s 35-14 defeat of Hoover, Alabama’s champion from its highest classification, and Buford's 17-0 downing of Trinity Christian Academy, the 3A champion from Florida that finished #16 in the ratings.

Maxwell's top 150 Southern US teams are below.  For comparison, the Freeman computer ratings, sponsored by MaxPreps, currently has Colquitt County as the third best team among the seven states while Buford is ranked 12th.
