For the fourth consecutive week, Etowah found itself down a score barely a minute into the game. While not an ideal scenario, the Eagles have learned to play from behind and escaped Milton a 38-20 on Friday at the Eagles Nest.

“Our theme this week was don’t look at the scoreboard,” Etowah coach Dave Svehla said. “I think our kids did a great job of continuing to play.”

With the win, Etowah moves to 6-1 and 4-1 in Region 5-AAAAAA, while the Milton Eagles drop to 1-5 and 1-3.

On the second play of the game’s opening drive, Milton’s Cameron Adams broke a 75-yard run to put Milton ahead 7-0 35 seconds into the first quarter.

Etowah responded with a 14-play, 80-yard drive culminating in Patrick Ferris’ 21-yard touchdown pass to Jason Sisk. Etowah’s next possession ended in a fumble returned 30 yards by Troy Simon, which gave Milton a 14-7 lead with 11:50 remaining in the half.

Etowah tied the game with 3:27 left in the second quarter on Ferris’ 7-yard pass to Blake Jones. Etowah would later tack on a field goal with 27 second left and take a 17-14 lead into halftime.

Milton opened the first half with a big play, and Etowah returned the favor to start the second half. Tyray Devezin opened Etowah’s drive with a 36-yard run, followed by a 46-yard touchdown run for a 24-14 lead.

“It would seem like that was amazing coaching,” Svehla said. “But the reality is we tweaked a couple of things at halftime, but more than anything it was just getting our kids to understand where we thought they were going to be. On that touchdown toss, we felt like we had a good advantage at the point of the attack.

“Earlier in the game, we had that advantage, we just didn’t block the right people.”

Milton would respond with a 38-yard field goal on its next possession, but it would never get any closer.

Etowah added two more touchdowns – an 80-yard pass from Ferris to Bronson Rechsteiner and a 3-yard Devezin run – to ice the game.

Ferris finished with 210 passing yards on 12-of-16 passing and Devezin rushed for 137 yars on 19 carries.

Adams led Milton with 112 yards on 14 carries.
