FLOWERY BRANCH – Safety Charles Godfrey, who was added to the team last season, was signed to a one-year $1.5 million contract extension on Thursday.

Godfrey, 5-foot-11, 210 pounds, was originally selected by the Carolina Panthers in the third round (67th overall) of the 2008 NFL draft out of Iowa.

As the injuries mounted in the secondary last season, he was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on October 28, 2014.

He was with the Panthers for six-plus seasons after being released by the team.

Godfrey played in five games with the Falcons and seven games with the Panthers last season.

Last season, Godfrey was coming off Achilles surgery after playing just two games in 2013.

When the Panthers signed former Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud and former Saints safety Roman Harper in free agency, they moved Godfrey to cornerback and played him as the nickel corner.

Godfrey, who agreed to take a $4 million play cut, hadn’t played corner since his days at Iowa. He was victimized by slot receivers before the Panthers decided to release him.
