The weather in Atlanta on Wednesday will be beautiful — it just won’t feel quite like the last full day of summertime before the change in seasons.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said a projected high of 92 degrees this afternoon will feel more like July or August, “kind of like those dog days of summer.” But the heat will be accompanied by near total sunshine, he said.
“Yes, a little bit hot, but remember when everybody else is freezing cold in the wintertime, we are not,” Monahan said. “We will take these hot days at the end of summer. It will pay off once we get into the winter.”
Fall officially begins with the fall equinox at 9:03 p.m. Thursday. Monahan is expecting an even hotter day Thursday with a projected high of 94 degrees for Atlanta, which would threaten the record of 95 set in 1940. No heat records are in jeopardy Wednesday, he said.
On average, the city of Atlanta records 47 days in the 90s each year. Wednesday should be the city’s 58th day for 90-degree heat.
While Wednesday should be mostly sunny, a cold front arriving Thursday will bring a few more clouds and a slight 10% chance of rain. Monahan said most of North Georgia will stay dry, however, and the first full day of the new season should have a more autumnal feel.
“We’ve got a little front coming through, that could give us a little rain on Thursday, and beautiful weather for the first full day of fall,” he said. “Nothing but sunshine and some cooler temperatures.”
Monahan is calling for highs in the low 80s to finish the work week, which should be perfect for any Friday evening plans outdoors. Rain chances increase by the end of the weekend, according to the latest forecast.
