A dominating weather system has set up metro Atlanta for another nice day Tuesday with afternoon highs in the upper 70s.
The same area of high pressure resulted in sparkling weather Monday, and it will produce similar results Wednesday, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.
“We’ve got a beautiful weather day again for us again across North Georgia,” he said. “We were up at 74 degrees yesterday, 77 this afternoon. We do it with a lot of sunshine.”
This time of year, highs are typically in the mid-60s. Lows in the mid-40s Tuesday morning are closer to average, if a bit chilly. The mountains are starting the day in the 30s.
“It’s gonna be that way on the way into school this morning, so a warm coat needed,” Monahan said. “Dress in layers, because later today, coming home from school, it’s going to feel more like the beginning of October.”
Monahan expects only a few high clouds to drift into North Georgia’s sky on Tuesday. It will be perfect weather for leaf peeping in the mountains, but metro Atlanta will have to wait another week or so to experience peak fall color, he said.
Wednesday’s weather will be another carbon copy with a projected low of 48 and a projected high of 75, according to Channel 2. Monahan said Thursday will see a “bump in the road” as clouds thicken up and showers move in for the afternoon.
“We’re going to have a couple of showers around to start the day, and then into the afternoon and evening as a cold front moves in some more widespread rain, a little bit of heavier rain possible,” Monahan said.
Isolated storms are also possible, he said. Monahan expects the rain to clear out Friday morning before sunshine returns Friday afternoon. On the other side of the cold front, temperatures are predicted to drop back into the low 60s Friday and return to the 50s Saturday.
“Winter is not too far back behind this system,” Monahan said. “By Thursday that cooler air is getting closer to us, and as we head into the end of the week and into the weekend, much chillier weather moves in.”

There are major delays on I-285 after a series of crashes in Cobb County at the start of the Tuesday morning drive. The outer loop is shut down between the two crashes at South Atlanta Road and Paces Ferry Road, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
It was not clear when the interstate would reopen. The Traffic Center is encouraging Cobb commuters to avoid I-285 altogether and use I-75 to get into downtown Atlanta.
