The lower humidity was nice while it lasted.

According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, humidity and rain chances will both increase Thursday ahead of what should be a rainy Labor Day weekend in metro Atlanta. The city will enjoy the more comfortable conditions for a few more hours before the sticky air returns.

With morning lows in the mid-60s, Monahan said it feels more like a late September morning than an early September one.

“You will feel the humidity come up later today,” he said. “It feels great this morning, but by the afternoon, with that humidity returning, a little chance for a shower or storm well south of I-20. We should stay mainly dry through this evening for the rest of North Georgia.”

Rain chances are still limited Thursday at about 20% for those south of Atlanta, he said. That chance increases to 40% Friday for metro Atlanta, and showers and storms are 60% to 70% likely for the long holiday weekend.

Monahan said Friday should start mostly dry, with a stray shower or thunderstorm possible during the morning hours south of I-20. Most of the rain activity should hold off for the afternoon, he said.

“As we head into Labor Day weekend, rain and storm chances are going up,” he said. “I wish I had a better forecast for the holiday weekend. It may be a weekend, to catch up on some TV, do some things inside.”

Atlanta's projected high is 89 degrees on Thursday. There is a 20% chance of a shower or thunderstorm south of I-20.

That could impact some of the outdoor events planned around the city, including the Dragon Con parade scheduled to step off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linden Avenue and Peachtree Street.

The silver lining? The added clouds and showers means the weekend won’t be quite as hot. Atlanta is expected to end its streak in the 90s Thursday with a projected high of 89 degrees, and that number will continue to fall headed into Labor Day.

Friday’s projected high is 87, which is about average for this time of year, and by Monday the city should enjoy highs in the low 80s, according to the latest forecast.

Afternoon highs are expected to drop heading into Labor Day weekend. By Monday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan expects highs in the low 80s in Atlanta.
