Scattered thunderstorms in the forecast Friday are just a sign of things to come for what is looking like a soggy holiday weekend for North Georgia.
Rain is in the forecast every day this weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. While there will be dry periods Friday and Saturday, the second half of the weekend looks to be a washout, he said.
“That wetter pattern is here as we head into the weekend,” Monahan said. “Saturday is going to be your drier day of the Labor Day weekend days. Sunday and Labor Day are going to get wet. Cooler weather as well in the weekend forecast with the storms around North Georgia.”
Monahan is calling for a 40% chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm Friday, with isolated rain activity after lunchtime becoming more widespread for the evening drive. Even into Friday night, when high school football teams take the field, there is a 30% chance of a shower or storm around, he said.
Most of North Georgia is starting the day dry and humid with lows in the 70s.
“It should be pretty dry for most of us headed into work and school early this morning,” Monahan said. “Just a stray shower and a muggy start.”
With the rain and storms around this afternoon, Atlanta is not expected to leave the 80s for highs. Monahan expects temperatures to top out at 85 degrees in the city. Even cooler weather is on tap this weekend, he said.
Highs in the low 80s are in the forecast for Sunday and Labor Day as conditions turn soggy.
Monahan does not expect rain to impact Saturday morning activities, which is good news for the thousands expected to line Atlanta streets for the Dragon Con parade. The parade is scheduled to step off at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linden Avenue and Peachtree Street.
“Just a slight chance for a shower or thunderstorm,” Monahan said. “Better chances of rain into the afternoon. This will have an impact if you are tailgating for the Georgia game.”
By Saturday afternoon, rain chances increase to 70%, he said. That could force some college football fans inside ahead of the University of Georgia kickoff game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“Have indoor plans ready to go,” Monahan said.
