Five people were injured in a five-vehicle crash along I-85 South in Fairburn that left a tractor-trailer jackknifed and traffic at a standstill for more than five hours Wednesday.

The widely scattered wreck was reported south of Fayetteville Road shortly before 10 a.m. and shut down all southbound lanes. For several hours, the big rig was sitting horizontally across the interstate, backing up traffic all the way to I-285.

One lane of I-85 South was reopened around 1:30 p.m. By 3 p.m., all lanes had reopened but heavy traffic remained past 4 p.m. as authorities worked to clear the right shoulder of debris, Georgia Department of Transportation cameras showed.

Of the five people injured in the wreck, four were taken to a hospital, Fairburn police Deputy Chief Anthony Bazydlo said. Three were reported to be in “very serious condition,” he said.

A garbage truck also appeared to be involved.

Because of the severity of the crash, Fairburn police turned the investigation over to Fulton County police. The state Motor Carrier Compliance Division was also on scene dealing with the tractor-trailer, according to Bazydlo.
